Health and safety doesn’t have a particularly cool reputation, especially when it comes to sports, but there is a reason safety devices exist, and one day they could get you out of some deadly situations. The Palm Glide is a compact waist belt PFD (personal floatation device) that conceals a 100 N floatation bladder which instantly inflates at a pull of the cord. It is designed with stand-up paddle boarding in mind, but is also suitable for kayaking, body boarding or any sport where extra precautions are a good idea.

The Glide is ISO certified, which in a nut shell means it has passed a bunch of important standards that ensure the safety and reliability of the product. In other words, you know you are in safe hands. The Glide comes in red or blue and features a handy phone-sized pocket and D-ring clip points to keep your valuables safe when you are out on the water. It comfortably clips out of the way around the waist, and the added padding on the hips reduces rubbing. It only weighs 535g and doesn’t restrict movement like those lumpy foam life jackets. When you need it you just to give the large toggle a good tug and the jacket will self-inflate, pop out of the Velcro and then is simply pulled over the head and tied at the neck. An air tube allows you to top up or reduce inflation if needed, much like the ones they demonstrate on flights. The whole thing can be used again with a replacement 24g CO2 cylinder, and there are numbered markings on the device to show you how to pack it all away properly, as well as a handy video on the website.

The Palm Glide does exactly what it needs to do, exactly when you need it to, and when it comes to safety, what more could you ask for? RRP £89.95
