We have played with alarms that wake you up with using sound, light and even vibrations but we have never come across something that wakes you up using your sense of smell (here’s me waiting for an alarm clock that wakes you by putting breakfast in your mouth). The Sensorwake Trio from Bescent uses smell, light and sound (a trio of senses) to wake you up in the morning. The box came with the Sensorwake 2 alarm clock, some capsules to get you started and a mains cable and plug. This compact little clock has a contemporary design with modern white lines, wooden detailing and a clear display screen, it is incredibly easy to set up; simply plug it in, pop your chosen scent cartridge in the top and select your wake-up time. The Sensorwake aims to gently wake you up within three minutes by arousing the senses; in the first minute the scent is diffused, in the second minute the light is activated and in the third minute your chosen melody will kick in. Each cartridge lasts about a month or for 30 uses whichever comes first, there are five melodies to choose from in total, the sound could do with being a little smoother, it’s a bit plinky plonky like old school ring tones, we would love to be able to chose some sounds from nature, bird song for example or even better an option to add your own tunes via an SD.
There are 15 scents to currently choose from, all created in France by Givaudan: cappuccino, seaside, peppermint, orange juice, citrus zest, cookies, tropical fruits, grass meadow, chocolate factory, apple and cinnamon, tea tree, pine forest, rose garden, soft moss and freesia. So how did it work? Well the concept is great; as someone who struggles to get up in the morning, I was excited to see how it performed but sadly it needs some work before it can get me springing out of bed. The scent leaks out of the clock before it’s activated, so your senses already become accustomed to it, making less of an impact in the morning, we tested out the peppermint and cappuccino scents and found that neither of them was very strong. The light needs to be brighter to disturb my deep sleep, I found I was only woken up by the melody and the automatic snooze made it perfectly easy to sleep through the entire thing. For me it needs to be brighter, smellier, and with a wider range of melodies, but for lighter sleepers it might prove effective. The lack of heat or liquid in the diffusion process, attractive design and bags of potential makes this a really interesting product and we will be eager to see what future versions of this clock might bring.
