Summer means camping, hiking, days out and holidays. However, as a coffee fiend, that shouldn’t mean you miss out on your precious cup of coffee to start the day. Carrying around our large coffee machines and coffee setups when we adventure obviously isn’t a possibility; therefore, I was excited to see the Mino Portable Electric Espresso Machine from OutIn, which aims to deliver a barista-style coffee no matter where you are – and all in a compact unit that can be easily put in your pocket!

The OutIn Mino Portable Electric Espresso Machine is a super compact espresso machine which is designed to be taken with you on the go so you can enjoy an espresso anywhere, from the top of a mountain to a picnic in the park with some friends. The unit is remarkably small, measuring around 67mm in diameter and 195mm in height, with its overall size not much larger than an insulated water bottle you might carry every day. The small size, weighing around 695g, makes it perfect for putting in your bag when packing for a trip, knowing you can produce high-quality espressos no matter where you are!

The operation of the Mino Portable Electric Espresso Machine for ground coffee is super simple; you just remove the cup, unscrew the portafilter, remove the filter basket and take off the lid. Using the included spoon, fill one full scoop of your chosen coffee grounds and put this into the filter basket. Gently tamp the coffee using the back of the spoon and then assemble the filter basket and portafilter. This then screws into the base of the main unit, and you can place the machine on the cup, ready for extraction. The last step is adding water, which you pour into the top of the machine, and then pick your chosen setting using the button on the front. Here, the setting you choose depends on whether you put in cold or pre-boiled water.

For cold water, you will need to heat the water within the Mino Portable Electric Espresso Machine, which typically only takes a few minutes. Once heated, the machine will then build up the advanced 22-bar pump pressure inside to extract a rich and creamy espresso that any barista would be proud of. For hot water, you don’t need to pre-heat the water and can get straight to extracting!

The resulting espresso from the OutIn Mino Portable Espresso Machine is delightfully creamy, and with the unit heating up your water in around 2 and a half minutes, it’s a brilliant and quick unit for coffee on the go. I also love that the unit gives you some variety, because you can even use compatible coffee pods in place of just ground coffee, making the whole design even more streamlined if you love a coffee pod instead! Ultimately, no matter whether you use ground coffee or a pod, it produces a lovely, rich and aromatic espresso which is perfect for a wide variety of drinks.

Obviously, with a coffee unit that is designed to be portable, the battery life plays a key role, especially if you want it for coffee in locations where you may not have a power source, so you can’t easily recharge the unit. Thankfully, OutIn have factored this into its design, and so the Mino Portable Espresso Machine is powered by three 3000mAh batteries. These can deliver up to around 6 espresso shots when it has to heat the water, which is perfect for multiple uses over a long weekend trip before it needs to be recharged. However, when extracting using already hot water, the unit can deliver an impressive 500 cups! Then, when it does need charging, the unit recharges super-fast with USB-C fast charging, achieving a full charge in as little as 90 minutes – great for quick charging on the go!

I was impressed to see that the Mino Portable Electric Espresso Machine has been designed to stably extract espresso even in high-altitude conditions. This design ensures that even at the types of altitudes you’d experience on mountain plateaus where atmospheric pressure is decreased, the unit can still deliver consistent brewing and high-pressure extraction in the espresso machine. In fact, it is also designed to withstand extreme temperatures ranging from -15° C to 45°C.
