Clear audio is a vital part of content creation so that your audience knows what you’re saying and gets a more enjoyable viewing experience. For this reason, many choose to attach large microphones to their cameras, or in more recent years, have begun investing in smaller clip-on microphones that let them get top-quality audio in a hands-free way. This is something that JOBY noticed, and so developed their Wavo AIR microphones which allow you to record top-quality audio completely hands-free.

The JOBY Wavo Air provides a modular audio set-up where you attach the receiver to your phone or camera and then connect it to audio transmitters which you either hold or can wear. The transmitters have a magnetic backing so can be attached to you using the included magic magnetic lanyard, which can be worn under or over your clothes. The transmitters then just snap to the lanyard, and you can operate completely hands-free. This hands-free design means you are no longer tethered to your camera and can instead let your creativity flow knowing the microphones are picking up your audio without holding it. I personally liked that I could set up the camera and then move around whilst talking instead of being forced to sit in the same position to ensure the microphone picked up the audio and delivered great sound quality.

JOBY are passionate about developing content creation tools to make the whole experience just that little bit easier, so the entire modular system just needs to be connected and you’re ready to go. The super simple setup made recording on the go so much easier, as there was no hassle with wires or syncing. Plus, to ensure that the sound quality remains high, the Wavo Air comes with 2 lavalier microphones that can be plugged directly into the transmitters for even clearer directional audio. However, the transmitters themselves are equipped with a top-quality microphone, but a fluffy windjammer can be added to the transmitters to prevent wind from affecting the sound quality whilst on the go too.

I was super impressed with the sound quality; each microphone enhanced the audio and made it much easier to film whilst moving around without any of the dreaded rustling that I’ve experienced with worn microphones before. The sound was perfect for shooting content, and I think would be ideal for when filming content with another person as the two mics ensure both voices are clearly heard without both having to lean over a single fixed microphone.

If you film content on the go a lot or prefer the freedom of a hands-free microphone experience then the JOBY Wavo AIR is a great choice. I’d definitely recommend this to content creators, or even for use for seamless interviews at conferences – in all these settings the sound quality and ease of use makes them an asset to any content creators kit.

Pros:

  • Magnetic connection for easy handsfree use
  • Great sound quality for small microphones
  • Loved the addition of the lavalier and windjammers to enhance sound quality further depending on the environment

Cons:

  • Only 2 transmitter microphones in the set so may need to purchase more if used for larger conference or interview group settings
