The Atomic by Spur is a powerful Smartwatch that works by using a separate microSIM card so you can link it to your Smartphone and use it not just as a display for notifications but so you can reply to messages, answer calls and browse the web also. It offers the same connectivity as would your phone with built in Bluetooth and GPS, you can also stay connected with all your social media accounts Facebook, Twitter basically any app the you can run on Android 4.2. The large 320 x 240 LCD screen gives you an excellent display as well as being satisfyingly responsive with the touch screen, there are two physical buttons on the side, the power button that doubles as a lock screen button that will display a traditional clock face on the screen and also allows you to quickly select airplane mode, vibrate and silent, the lower button works much the same as any android home button. The built in microphone and speaker work surprisingly well, you may feel a bit of a muppet talking into your wrist but secretly you know you will look like James Bond, if you are the sporty type thet built in GPS really comes in handy for tracking you run or cycle without having to carry your smart phone, you can even link it to a set of Bluetooth headphones so you can listen to music on the go. The Atomic has no option for external memory so you have to negotiate around 4GB which by today’s standards can be rather limiting, another issue I had was the small rubber plug that protects the charging port fell out and disappeared after a week of use and the keyboard is a bit fiddley due to the screen size but this it to be expected on a product this size. The Atomic almost works too well for its own good, it is a powerful device that exceeds expectation but to produce that power it has to be large enough to cram in the technology, this results in a rather chunky and ugly looking lump attached to your wrist by an even uglier rubber strap which I can only assume was chosen to help keep the weight down and the combination of the two producing what looks like an 80s film prop. So in conclusion I had a very love hate relationship with the Atomic, I can only see it replacing my phone when I am out for a run, other than that I would get sick of lugging it about on my small wrists and its 4GB memory can limit its use however there is definitely a place for the Atomic in the world, its high functionality would make it a worthy partner at work or on the commute although you may want to cover it up with a long sleeved shirt.
