I live with a person that I affectionately call a collector but is, in reality, a hoarder in training. It all started as a child with Kinder Egg toys and has progressed as an adult into vinyl records and creepy ‘vintage’ toys and curios. As you can imagine, his eyes lit up when he saw the Bell Jar Light, as his head flooded with items he could display in it.

If you have ever found yourself in the home décor corner of Pinterest, chances are you may have seen a classic bell jar stood in a corner, perhaps housing a Poe inspired crow or an old camera. The Bell Jar Light is the world’s first and only bell jar to have a built-in light. The main dome is hand-blown glass on a painted wooden base, with a plastic stand on which to place your prized possession. The dome is 200mm in diameter and 250mm high. It works off a USB powered, UK/EU/USA/Australia adaptor that comes included, and has an on/off switch halfway up the fabric coated cord. It features cool-running LEDs with two diffusers that provide a wide and even illumination over the whole base.

The wood used for the base is recycled from old cut-offs, which is better for the environment. However, when it arrives, the Bell Jar does come with a load of plastic polystyrene foam to protect the delicate dome, which is obviously not so good for the environment at all. That said, it is difficult to think of another form of packaging that could protect the glass on transit.

At £100, the Bell Jar Light isn’t cheap, and for this price I think the quality of the base should be improved. The plastic cover comes away easily and the glass sits loosely on the base, which when living with a klutz is never a good idea. Once you have an item in the jar it does look cool with the dramatic up-light, and your ‘treasure’ immediately appears more valuable than it probably is. So, will my partner be shelling out hundreds of pounds to display his favourite items in the Bell Jar? I think even he would draw the line there! RRP £100
