The BISSELL CrossWave claims to do it all by simultaneously vacuuming and washing hard floors and area rugs in one simple step. This 3-in-1 product can clean multiple floor types in one action, it has a digital touch control, a pivoting head and can move between, hard surfaces, rugs or carpet seamlessly.
There are two actions at work here: first, the suction is used to remove dirt, dust and hair whilst the multi-surface brush roll scrubs the floor. The CrossWave can be used on rugs, tiles, sealed wooden floors, laminate, lino and vinyl, but it is not suitable for carpet. When used with the multi-surface formula (included) it powers through stains and sticky messes and provides a streak-free finish. When using it on your rugs, the CrossWave device injects a solution of warm water with the multi-surface cleaner into the material, whilst the rotating brush dislodges and removes dirt.
The design of the CrossWave is a bit clumpy looking, but it is quite tall which helps manoeuvre it around and the narrow body is handy for storage (dimensions 115.5H x 31W x 31D cm) and weighs 5kg, putting it somewhere in the middle of the vacuum weight category and light enough to move around or carry up/down stairs. The cord length could do with being a bit longer; at just 7.5m, you feel a bit tethered to the wall. The body can be laid down flat to let you get under furniture and you can choose between hard & soft surfaces at a touch of a button, as well as switching it to wet washing and adding a little extra water on particularly grubby surfaces. The suction is adequate but isn’t amazing, it is strongest in the centre of the cleaning head but not great around the sides, which means getting to dirt along skirting boards or into corners is difficult. Using the wet and dry functions is easy enough: it has an 828ml clean-water capacity and will hold 620ml of dirt, which can be quickly emptied at the end of your clean. The brush head can also be accessed to be cleaned or replaced. The wet clean works well, again it isn’t going to blow you away - you may need to go over some areas a few times, but it isn’t really an issue.
The CrossWave is a good choice if you are looking to avoid multiple products and save space. It isn’t the most powerful vacuum out there and it has limited functions and tools. Best suited for larger surface areas. RRP £249.99
