The Withings Aura is no ordinary alarm clock. I would hate to use the term “smart alarm” but the Aura truly is packing some brains, with a combination of light, music and a sleep sensor which recognises your optimal time to wake.

I have never been a morning person, waking up has always felt like a form of torture to me whilst actually getting to sleep seems to be some kind of special power that I was born without, so the Withings Aura looked like a product designed with me in mind. On the Auras features, the light uses optimised colours to promote the secretion of sleep hormones with Its programmed sounds helping to induce sleep. The alarm works by gently increasing the light and/or audio to slowly and softly wake you. The sleep sensor discretely lays underneath your mattress and tracks sleep duration, sleep cycle variation (deep, light and REM) and time awake, waking you at the best time of your sleep cycle. On top of all that, the Aura sensors also record temperature, luminosity and ambient noise levels; all factors that can disrupt a good night’s sleep.

So what did we think? Firstly, the device has a stylish finish, looking more than at home on my bedside table. I love that it works with Spotify, meaning you can customise what audio you choose to wake you in the morning. I found the sleep inducing programme was relaxing but only if I was already tired. The sleep sensor is a bit hit and miss in terms of accuracy, but perhaps that is more down to the fact I have a king-size bed. The Alarm however is brilliant, I have found I am waking up more naturally, I don’t have that foggy feeling when I first get up, no I’m not springing out of bed with a big smile on my face but it has helped ease the pain of early mornings.

The sleep sensor does provide some handy feedback but I don’t think it is worth the extra £100 you need to shell out for it, you can pick up an activity tracker with better accuracy for less. The alarm itself is great, anything that can make mornings a little less of a struggle is certainly worth the money in my eyes. RRP £179.99
