The Twelve South Journal for MacBook Air and Pro
RRP £119.99 – 13” and £134.99 – 15”
In this issue of Gadget Head, we’ve reviewed The Twelve South Journal for MacBook Air and Pro. Designed for the current MacBook range with USB-C ports, the 13-inch is suitable for the MacBook Air or Pro, while the 15-inch is designed for the larger MacBook Pro.
With the Twelve South Journal, the company has designed a very simple, slim and extremely stylish MacBook case. With leather outer and soft micro-suede inner, strong inserts and reinforced corners for durability, as well as double-zips for convenience, you can guarantee your beloved MacBook is in good hands.
With a simple and beautiful tan leather colour and contrasting stitch work ,finished off with an elegant embossed Journal logo bottom-right of the front of the case, an embossed Twelve South logo bottom centre on the rear, and ‘Journal’ embossed on the spine, you’d be forgiven for mistaking this case as a real journal on a bookshelf or desk, further protecting your beloved Macbook from eagle-eyed thieves.
The case is constructed from full-grain vegetable-tanned leather from New Zealand. It is only available in medium tan, but it’s such a beautiful and classic look that you don’t need options. The case has been given an oil and wax treatment to offer basic water resistance, and the coating also adds UV protection, thus limiting it from fading. However, as with any leather, you may still notice some colour change over time.
The Twelve South Journal looks impressively simple and stylish. The protective coating means it doesn’t feel quite as soft as it would without it, but that’s the trade-off you make, and I think it’s the right call for a case which is often used on its own to carry a MacBook under your arm. It has elasticated corner straps to the screen so that the laptop opens when you open the case. This can be more convenient in places like trains, restaurants and coffee shops where you may not have anywhere to put the empty case.
The Twelve South Journal gives you full access to all USB-C ports and a hidden document compartment. The dual zips make it quick to open than a case with a single zip, and it’s a very smooth action.
