When you think about hammocks the first image that comes to mind might be a large net hammock hanging between palm trees on a sun kissed beach but lately it has become a growing trend to exchange the traditional tent for a sleep hammock. Norwegians have a wonderful relationship with their countryside and camping is very popular out there so when we received the Norwegian designed Amok Draumr 3.0 hammock I already had high hopes and I wasn’t disappointed. It is clear this has been designed by outdoorsy types and has been repeatedly tested in the tough Norwegian wilds, it exhibits a high grade construction and its innovative design allows you to lay flat or in a seated position as well as comfortably on your front and sides. The Draumr 3.0 comes with, the hammock, suspension straps, bug net and waterproof tarp which all packs down into its own compact stuff bag, we were a little disappointed to find that the inflatable sleep pad doesn’t come with it as you need it to set up the hammock correctly, Amok don’t actually produce them but there is plenty of information on the website to help you get the right make and size to suit your needs. After a few hiccups with the first test run we found the hammock fairly simple to erect, the only real issue was finding a suitable spot close to camp. The trees need to be a minimum of 2.5 m / 8 feet and a maximum of 6 m / 20 feet apart and clear of brambles or any undergrowth that could damage the material, the suspension straps are colour coded to make life easier and you keep the hammock in the bag at this stage to stop you from getting all tangled up. From there you simply pop in your sleep mat and adjust the straps to get the right balance, we struggled with this at first as we kept over adjusting but after setting it up a few times it became easier and quicker to get the right balance each time. The tarp also stress-free to attach and will give you some protection from rain, wind or bright sunlight. We found this really comfortable and a great addition to the campsite but as a replacement for a tent it would probably suit the more minimalist outdoor adventurer and this is where I think its weight will go against it as with the tarp and stakes it weighs a hefty 2053g. Still this is a wonderfully innovative idea and great alternative to the standard tent/sleep mat bringing a whole new dimension to outdoor sleeping. RRP $400
