Smith the Roll Pack (18L) has a rather unique and minimalist design created to ensure you can go further and travel for longer. Measuring up at 50 (H) x 28 (W) x 15 (D) cm and weighing 850g when empty, it is a good size and reasonably light.
The exterior is made from a tough Bionic Canvas which is 38% cotton, 57% recycled polyester and 5% high-tenacity polyester, it is 100% paraffin wax impregnated and DWR treated for protection against bad weather. The Bionic Canvas is 30% stronger than regular canvas whilst the inner is lined with 100% recycled polyester (yay for all this recycled polyester), the buckles are made from a strong aluminium and the hook design makes it quick and easy to fasten/unfasten. The shoulder straps are fully adjustable with a practical amount of padding, there is a removable waist and sternum straps for a more secure hold if you take the bag cycling or hiking, it also helps to distribute the weight more evenly over your body, however the waist strap could do with a little padding to make things more comfortable on longer trips.
On the inside there is an easy to access padded laptop sleeve which will house a device up to 15” hidden in the back panel, there are also pockets for your tablet, phone, documents and office gear, an external zip pocket for valuables, with an internal key ring. When the main compartment is opened it can be difficult getting hold of items at the very bottom as the material is quite stiff although it doesn’t help that my arms are short too. There is a fold away reflective strip and a section to clip on a light for better visibility whilst walking or cycling. The back is well padded but provides poor circulation so be prepared for some large sweat patches on your back at the end of the day. The Smith Roll Pack is an attractive and premium built bag, it is easy to load and unload with lots of pockets to keep your gear organised, however the poor ventilation and lack of padding on the hip belt means it can grow uncomfortable on long journeys.
