Peak Design was founded in 2010 after Peter Dering from Minnesota realised what a hassle it is to travel with a DSLR, and through support from a team of adventurers, urban commuters, designers and of course photographers (and a massive Kickstarter campaign), the company was born. We will be looking at Peak Design’s Everyday Messenger Bag, which is packed full of useful features to make travelling with a camera an easier experience

The Everyday Messenger Bag is available in charcoal and ‘heritage tan’, suitable for either a 15” or 13” laptop size. Peal Design went back to the drawing board with the Everyday Messenger, aiming to breathe new life into the tired standard messenger bag design. This bag was created for photography, but it can be used by anyone. The most unique detail is the MagLatch closure, designed to be a no-look, one-handed, quiet and secure fastening. It is weirdly satisfying to use; there are four ladder lock points riveted to a stainless steel internal plate, and a magnet that catches the plate, creating a lock-free soft closure.

The three Flex-Fold dividers and the expanding multi-panel design offers lots of versatility for organising and maximising the space inside the main compartment for your gear. The 15" model will carry a complete daily photography kit, up to a full-frame DSLR with three lenses and accessories, with a protected laptop pocket with a tablet/document sleeve that is accessible without opening main bag compartment. The built-in tripod carrier is compatible with nearly all tripods, whilst the included silicone band keeps your tripod legs together while on the move. There are also two dedicated capture clip attachment points for fast exterior camera access. The bag has a handy zip along the top that allows quick and easy access to the main compartment without having to undo the clasp. There are also two side pockets for quick access to keys, lens caps, wallets and smartphones, and a hidden key/ID tether that features an integrated Anchor Link connector in one of the side pockets.

I love the details Peak Design have put into this bag. Simple things like colour-coded sticking in the organiser pockets (red and green) can help keep your stuff in order - for example, dead batteries and full memory cards go in the red whilst the fully charged and empty memory cards go in the green: genius. It can be worn as a messenger or shoulder bag – the strap has hooks that allow you to switch between the two styles, and the whole thing can be adjusted with a super smooth buckle that pops open and locks down. I fell in love with this bag; every aspect has been designed and redesigned whilst asking the question, how can we make this better? The only teeny tiny niggle I have is due to the material the shoulder strap is made from - it is very smooth and slips when wearing it as a shoulder bag, especially in padded waterproof style jackets. A few silicone strips here would easily stop this from happening. Other than that, it is a fantastic bag, awesome for photographers but could easily become a day bag, beach bag, commuter work bag or even a nappy bag. RRP $219.95
