The Darwin Ski Jacket produced by Faction is a durable, technical outer shell that will protect you even on the harshest of slopes. It features a 20,000mm/20,000gm Toray Dermizax three-layer fabric, Stunner Stretch material technology, sealed seams and a helmet-compatible hood, to name a few. Available in four colours - Colbalt Blue, Field Green, Rosso Red and Russet Brown - and in sizes S-XL, we received the Field Green variety to look in to in more detail.
The Darwin has 100% sealed seams that are welded closed to stop rain getting into the tiny holes made by the stitches. There are zips under both arms that provide you with extra venting when you need it the most. The 3L Toray Dermizax material is extremely waterproof whilst at the same time remaining breathable; the membrane has tiny holes at molecular level that allow moisture from the body to escape whilst preventing larger drops of water from getting in, which helps you keep warm and dry even during the most strenuous activity. The 3-layer shell is uninsulated, meaning you can adapt your layers to the conditions and making it an appropriate outer layer for a variety of weathers.
The Darwin features an additional jacket-to-pant attachment system to keep the snow out on those powdery slopes and a light, ultra-thin ski skirt which springs up out of the way when not in use. This jacket has a lot of storage space, with six zip pockets on the outside, including one for your ski pass on the left arm and a headphone outlet in the chest pocket to keep all cables on the inside of your clothes. Additionally, there is a large mesh goggle pocket on the inside of the jacket.
The Darwin has a built in Recco reflector device that could help mountain rescue to find you in the event of an avalanche, not to be used as a substitute for a rescue beacon but to be used as well as. It also has a built in, hard-plastic piece of branding on the chest, which is the only thing I don’t like about the jacket. It feels like it wouldn’t take a lot of pressure to break it, and if it did break it could tear the jacket - an unnecessary risk.
This jacket it comfortable to wear, lightweight and colourful. It keeps out rain, wind and snow, and if the sunshine does come out it will keep you cool as well - a brilliant outer shell. RRP £369
