Anyone who cycles seriously will probably agree that bib shorts are not the coolest element of cycling apparel, but fashion isn’t the priority here - cycling is all about performance. With that in mind, if you are going to invest in a pair of bib shorts, you needn’t look any further than the Rapha Classic Bib Shorts II.

Available in six colours - black, black/cream, dark grey, dark purple, navy and navy/white - these shorts have been reworked to produce the second generation of the Classic Bib Shorts. They feature a shiny new, bum friendly, body-contoured padding, a soft chamois finish that can have you sitting pretty on the saddle for hours of comfortable riding. There is no ‘one size fits all’ with these shorts; there are three different sized pads used in a pair, from size XS to XXL, to ensure a precise fit.

These shorts are constructed from 74% polyamide and 26% elastane, which results in a soft, matt finish with a great deal of give for ease of movement, whilst the bibs are formed from a luxury mesh featuring a generous cutaway in the back to allow breathability. As any cyclist will tell you, a decent pair of shorts can make or break you - a rough bit of stitching that tickles at the start of the ride can slowly turn into a burning piece of sandpaper by the end, so to ensure against chafing, Rapha's bib shorts have flatlock stitching throughout and a new, more efficient leg gripper with a reduced weight.

The Classic Bib Shorts II feature a small key pocket and are cut low at the front for when nature calls. I would like to see a little reflective detailing on the legs - maybe the logo could be reflective? Anything that can help you become more visible is always a positive thing.

When it comes to comfort, you will do well to beat the Classic Bib Shorts II; whether it’s a long or short trip, a hard or leisurely outing, these shorts will take care of your body and allow you to enjoy the ride. RRP £165
