Reef was established over 30 years ago by two south American brothers Fernando and Santiago Aguerre, their vision, to produce a high quality active lifestyle sandal. The Rover XT sandal isn’t the typical socks and sandal, dads on holiday kind of footwear, these are all action sports sandals (yes there is such a thing). Featuring thick multi-cross straps across the top of the foot and another around the ankle, lined with a soft slightly padded material that feels comfortable against the skin even when wet. The moulded shape compliments the contours of the foot and the “triple density construction” as reef describe, or “nice squidgy sole” as I describe it, feels great to walk about in, there is enough grip on the sole to stay grippy when wet also. The outsole uses Reef’s signature Swellular Technology, deep grooves that mimic the natural patterns produced in the sand by the waves, they are angled downwards at the top half of the foot and upwards from the bottom of the foot, these grooves make for a good traction in or out of the water. The Rover RT can be adjusted with a buckle that tightens or loosens on the outside of the ankle, as the strap wraps around the ankle and over the foot a simple adjustment holds the whole foot not just the ankle in place. It is easy enough to adjust and the buckle holds the strap securely so they don’t loosen up whilst you walk, it would be nice if you were able to adjust the other top strap just for added comfort for those with a wider foot or hot swollen holiday feet. We tested out the brown version but they are also available in black and in a speckled grey (my personal favourite), this brings me to my only real negative which is with their thick shiny straps they just don’t look very stylish, some people may roll their eyes at this comment but I think it’s something that some might find a deal breaker, I think a matt look on the straps could perhaps improve the look. These are good active outdoor sandals that will protect your feet whether you are walking along pebble beaches or pushing your canoe out on the slip way, these will give you good traction while remaining comfortable without breaking the bank.
