My first impression of the Blaze was how smooth the packaging was, reminiscent of the newest smart phone it would make a nice gift, however packaging aside the Blaze itself looks equally impressive. The wrist strap feels strong but flexible and the surgical-grade stainless steel buckle and frame give it a stylish look and feel without making it heavy or bulky. As you would expect it comes with a whole host of features for example the step counter, automatic sleep tracker, silent alarm that we have all seen before in a Fitbit, as well as being able to link it to your phone for instant notifications for messages and calls. A cool new feature with the Blaze is it gives you control over your music (synched and playing from your phone) so you can turn the volume up and down, skip a track, start/stop all from a touch of a button on your wrist, much easier than pulling your phone out, unlocking it and finding you music app. Another new feature for Fitbit is the heart rate monitor, it allows you to get accurate heart rate information without having to wear an uncomfortable chest strap, this means your work out is more efficient as you can get real time feedback of your heart rate and use target zones whilst working out. As well as that the heart rate monitor works all day, not just during exercise giving you a more realistic idea of calories burnt overall, rather than basing it on steps taken. The FitStar features give you an on screen step by step workout on the Blaze’s large colour touchscreen display and the sports modes will give you real time feedback during activities such as running, cycling and cardio workouts however like so many of these trackers it cannot offer feedback with swimming as it is only splash-proof. It works alongside the Fitbit app which is easy to use and will keep a history of your daily achievements (or lack off) for you to analyse your progress, the battery will last you about 4 days and takes just under 2hours to charge up fully again and as with the other Fitbit products you can personalise the Blaze with different colour straps and materials. The Blaze is a good fitness tracker with all the latest mod cons but it’s not without a few niggles, the first is that you have to remove the tracker from the casing to charge it, it needs to be clipped into a little box to charge, the whole thing seems a bit unnecessary, why can’t you just get a normal cable to stick into the thing keeping it altogether? The little catches to switch the straps over are fiddly, even for someone with nails but not enough to put you off entirely from changing the straps. Sadly, the connectivity is a little hit and miss, same issues as I have with my Flex, when you try to connect it is any bodies guess as to whether it will or not, it’s a pain in the back side but something I have already become accustomed to when using Fitbit and other activity trackers alike. Aside from a few issues it is a good all-rounder, with plenty of features to keep you motivated and in control of your overall fitness and health. RRP £159.99
