Grangers: The Ultimate Outdoor Wear Cleaning Tools

The summer is fast approaching, and that means many of us will be venturing outside for various activities, including hiking and camping, where we can make the most of the warmer weather. For this, we’re putting on our hiking boots and grabbing a waterproof jacket because you never can trust British weather to stay dry! However, with all this great waterproof gear, I’ve always had one thought – how are you meant to wash them?

We got to test out a range of products from Grangers, which included the Performance Wash (£7.50). The Performance Wash is the perfect gentle cleaner for waterproof and technical gear to keep it clean and fresh. You just pop half a capful of the wash into the detergent drawer of your washing machine as you usually would, and it will provide a gentle clean that removes all dirt and odour, whilst maintaining the existing waterproof nature of it. This is perfect for cleaning all outdoor gear, as I’ve always worried that regular detergents might make my waterproof clothing less waterproof in the long term. The Performance Wash just needs to be put on a 30°C wash (or follow the items' washing instructions), and it will come out smelling clean and looking refreshed.

I will note that the Performance Wash we got to test out was in the 300ml size, which offers around 12 washes per bottle. Whilst this is a little pricier than typical laundry detergents on the market, for specialised waterproof and technical gear that you’re likely not washing as often, it’s a worthwhile slightly higher expense per wash to ensure that the waterproof nature and the performance of your items are not compromised. Thus, the Performance wash offers a gentle but effective cleaner that will have your gear smelling fresh, ready for where your next adventure takes you.

So, how do you wash items that can’t be put in the washing machine? Grangers’ Footwear + Gear Cleaner (£5.95) is the perfect solution! The Footwear + Gear Cleaner from Grangers is a nifty spray cleaner, which can be used on a whole range of items to remove dirt, grime and odours to give things that may not be washing machine safe a bit of care. I’ve found items such as shoes and jackets often get the dirtiest, but they’re often the hardest to clean, and so spot washing seems to be the best option. However, beyond water and a bit of soap, I struggle to know the best way to clean such items without harming the breathability or waterproof coating. This is why the Footwear and Gear Cleaner from Grangers’ is a great option, as it offers a reliable cleaning solution you can spray directly onto your item, whether it's some walking boots, a waterproof jacket, or even a rucksack. Once sprayed, you just wipe with a damp cloth, let it air-dry, and it will leave your items clean and odour-free. I think this would be especially ideal for use between washes, especially if you accidentally get some dirt on something like your jacket, to quickly spot clean without needing to put the entire thing in the wash.

Another great spot cleaning option is the Odour Eliminator (£10.95) from Grangers, which, as the name suggests, is a powerful odour-fighting tool to help keep your things smelling fresh – especially if they can’t be easily machine-washed. We’ve all been there; you put on your waterproof jacket and can’t help but feel like it smells a little musty from your last adventure. With the Odour Eliminator, you just need to spray and let it dry, and any odour is neutralised without any hassle. This is an especially great option for shoes to help remove any undesired smells and allow you to embark on a new adventure without any bad smell following you! The spray would be especially useful for things such as gym equipment or helmets, which are very difficult to wash, but can get a bit smelly over time.
