Ladies and gentlemen of a nervous disposition, please turn away now. We are about to tackle a taboo that affects half the world’s population and in some countries, keeps girls from attending school every single month. Yes, we are talking about when Aunt Flo comes to visit, when the painters are in or when you are suffering from girl flu; whatever you like to call it and no matter how much society pretends they don’t exist, periods are very real and at times a massive pain in the neck (and lower abdominal area).
Three friends who were sick of working around tampons, sanitary towels and cups decided to revolutionise the way we deal with our periods by creating a range of underwear that can be worn without any other sanitary products. Each pair holds a different amount: the Hiphugger, Hi-Waist and Boyshorts hold two tampons’ worth, the Sport holds one and a half tampons’ worth, the Cheeky holds one tampon’s worth and the Thong holds half a tampon’s worth, so you can select your favourite style to match you flow. All Thinx underwear is available in either black or beige (yes, you can wear beige on your period!)
We received the Hiphugger and Cheeky to look at more thoroughly. They work by using four bits of tech that makes them anti-microbial, moisture wicking, absorbent and leak-resistant. The top layer fights bacteria and absorbs any liquid into the ultra-thin layer beneath it. They are reusable - you need to rinse them immediately after use with cold wash and hang dry (don’t use bleach or fabric softener.)
After a week of testing, we can confirm that the Thinx do indeed work - I even went running and did yoga in the Hiphugger! They are comfortable too, just like wearing regular underwear. There is the downside of rinsing them out, which might put some women off, but I love the fact they are reusable, as it helps the environment and saves me spending money on sanitary products. If that wasn’t enough, every pair purchased will directly support the THINX Global Girls’ Club, which aims to support, educate and provide menstrual products to vulnerable girls. The bottom line here (see what I did there?) is that this range of underwear provided me with the most comfortable period I have ever had. They are an absolute game changer, and all women should know that this is an option available to them. From RRP £26.27
