In 1993 two inventive Swiss brothers, Markus and Daniel Freitag, created a weatherproof messenger bag from recycled truck tarpaulins, bicycle inner tube and a car seatbelt consequently the FREITAG company was born. Anytime a company uses recycled goods in their production they immediately score brownie points in our books but the FREITAG F14 Dexter Messenger bag really has gone above and beyond when it comes to upcycling. These funky looking bags are completely unique; no two bags are alike making yours as individual as your finger print. The Dexter is designed around the classic messenger bag design, it features a recycled car seat belt for a shoulder strap and another waist strap to keeping the bag secure making it an ideal companion for the cyclist, especially as the use of a bicycle inner tube edging around the main flap makes it a distant relative of the bike. The F14 Dexter features a small pocket (roughly A5 size) under the main flap that has a Velcro closure, inside there are two more small pockets and two elastic straps to help keep your gear secure whilst on the move. Inside the main compartment are four more pockets to keep belongings organised as well as a good sized main compartment, 12.6 × 3.7 × 11.4 inch (10 litre) with can be extended to 12.6 × 3.7 × 19.7 inch by pulling the inside lining out and closing up the sides with the Velcro strips provided. I think a bag like this is a love it or hate it kind of product, it is not a highly polished creation, it is rough around the edges, the tarp has scuffs from its previous lifestyle travelling around Europe, there is no lining inside the bag or padded shoulder straps, but for me this adds to the charm of the bag. The straps are comfortable to wear and we the waist strap is a useful addition, the edges of the tarp that are not lined with recycled rubber are quite rough, repeatedly putting your hand in and out of the front pocket for example can be a bit rough on your skin, recycled rubber edging on all rough edges would easily combat this problem. Other than that we loved the look and feel of the F14 Dexter, it is a trendy and distinctive water repellent messenger bag that proved comfortable to wear as well as looking awesome. RRP £150
