The Motion XL from Thule has big boots to fill as we gave exceptional reviews to his brothers the Carrier (Aug 15 issue) and the Carrier (Sep 15 issue) so we were excited to test this roof box.

The Thule Motion XL can take weights up to 75KG and the dimensions are 205cm (L) x 84cm (W) x 45cm (H), basically I could stuff a couple of the kids in there and there would still be room.  As you expect from Thule it is very well made and looks sleek parked on top of my Audi A3 with its black gloss finish and its forwarded position even allows me plenty of room to open the boot.  Empty, the Thule Motion XL weighs 19KG so one person can capably fix it to the rack and what I really liked was the pre-installed power-click quick-mount system with its integrated torque indicator which after I worked out what I was doing I realised you can securely fit with one hand while carrying the screaming toddler in the other.  Loading has also been made simple with its dual-side opening and outside lid handles, when you have crammed in your gear you can rid yourself of the anxiety of your goods flying out on the M1 with the central locking system, the grip friendly Thule Comfort Key can only be removed if all locking points are securely fastened.  RRP £440

The Motion XL comes with a 5 year guarantee from Thule and they offer a 90 day exchange scheme on all their roof boxes as they are aware that it is hard to determine how the roof box will fit and look on your vehicle by just using the dimensions on the website as guidelines.  To take advantage of the exchange scheme however please make sure you keep the box you received the roof box in and the roof box must be still in an as new condition.
