With food prices continuing to rise, making the most out of your food is super important. For this, you need the perfect storage solutions, which allow you to prepare, cook, store and reheat your food whenever you need it. However, one of the main concerns when it comes to storing and reheating food is what the storage container is made of and what harmful chemicals or odours it could be giving to your food.

For many of us, plastic containers lead the way for food storage, however, these are often left discoloured and with an odour. Plus, they cannot be thrown in the oven for reheating. This concern with how to store and cook food is something that the founder of Hokan focused on, and so they developed Hokan Bowls which provide a new and innovative stoneware design to create bowls that can be used in every step of cooking from preparing, to cooking, storing, serving and saving food in order to maximise your meals and save money in the process!

We were thrilled to get to test out the new Green Jade colourway of the Hokan Bowls, which come in a beautiful rich dark green colour. We got to test out the set of three, which features three different size bowls from the small 400ml bowl, to the medium 600ml, and then to the large 1000ml bowl. Each bowl features a matching green lid, which can be interchanged among the dishes for convenience. The bowls are made from stone, so they provide even heat distribution when heating to ensure all dishes are cooked or reheated efficiently. Plus, as they’re non-porous, there’s no dreaded staining and odours like you’d get with plastic storage vessels. The beautiful stone, ours in the new lovely green jade colour, has been glazed to keep food fresh and safe from pollutants. This makes them ideal for BPA-free households.

I love that the bowls can be used in the fridge, freezer, microwave, and oven. I loved leaving leftovers in the bowls and then popping them directly into the oven to reheat them for lunch the next day. There was no worrying about finding a microwave-proof plate or dish; instead, I could just heat it straight away to save time during my lunch hour. My only comment is that they are quite heavy, so for me, they are only ideal for days when I'm working from home, as I wouldn’t take them into the office as they’re not super portable, as the lids aren’t sealable like you have with a standard plastic lunch box.

However, one of my favourite things about the bowls is that each one has the same size lid because the size difference comes from the depth. This means that you never need to go searching for each specific lid and instead can put any of the lids on any bowl. This makes using the dishes even easier, and with each being the same size, they can all be stacked neatly on top of each other, which makes them perfect for storage whilst both in use and whilst in your cupboard.

The new green jade glaze colourway adds a beautiful and classy look to your kitchen during mealtime. I love using the dishes to serve directly at the table, but they also feel a little fancy for having delicious lunches during the week. Plus, the Hokan Bowls come in a whole range of colours, including antique white, pitch black, lemon yellow, cobalt blue, sea green, and blue reactive. Therefore, there are so many different colour options that you are sure to find an option that suits your aesthetics and kitchen.

Pros:

  • Lovely glaze design with multiple colour options available
  • Stoneware bowls that are nonporous to avoid odours or staining
  • Can be put in the freezer, fridge, oven and microwave without breaking

Cons:

  • As the lids cannot be sealed, and they are made from a heavy stoneware, they aren’t ideal as a replacement for sealable Tupperware that you might use for lunches on the go
