Yoga is one of those things that people have a misconception about, and I was know different before starting, I assumed it was all deep breathing and relaxing, gentle stretches, the reality is that tend if feel more stiff after a yoga class than I do a HIIT class or long run. You don’t need a load of gear for yoga however a decent yoga mat can mean the difference between you nailing a bound high lunge pose and landing square on your face. The Manduka PRO Series started with the Black Mat Pro and is still going strong 20years later, measuring at 180 cm x 66 cm with a 6mm thickness it maybe a little thicker (and heavier- 3.4kg) than you are used to, however this is deliberate. The density of the PRO Series aims to bring some extra stability whilst providing cushioning for those pointy elbows and knobbly knees, whilst the closed-cell construction prevents moisture from absorbing into the mat (yes yoga makes you sweat) and prevents bacteria build-up, making cleaning a breeze. The uniquely formulated material allows its grip to improve with every use, it is crafted in an emissions-free facility and OEKO-TEX certified, meaning it’s 100% safe for you, your kids and the dog to touch. This mat has been designed to last a lifetime, helping to curb the amount of PVC mats that enter landfills every year, during the manufacturing of most PVC products, toxic emissions may be released into the air, however, PRO series mats are manufactured through a process that ensures no toxic emissions are released into the atmosphere. The proprietary dot pattern bottom prevents the mat from slipping during practice, it is available in extra long if needed (an extra 35cm), to soft fabric like top lets you easily slide your feet and smoothly move between poses. I can only take Manduka’s word for it when it comes to lifetime guarantee however it only takes a little research to discover there are plenty of people out there still using theirs after many years. The mat has a pretty strong smell when you first start using it but a few days airing will remedy that, like all mats it will take a little breaking in and after a few weeks it performs admirably. It is thick enough to provide extra comfort when needed but not too spongy that it throws off your balance and the added thickness meant I could use it outside on the patio without any cheeky stones poking through. Due to the weight of the mat (and lack of storage bag) you might not fancy lugging it back and forth to the studio but it is well suited for home yogis.
