The MusicMan Sound Glasses have been one of the most anticipated gadgets in the GadgetHead office for some time now. The whole concept seems like a brilliant idea, and we couldn’t wait to try them out! So, before I tell you about what we thought, let me tell you more about the Sound Glasses Elegance BT-X58 by MusicMan.

The idea behind the Sound Glasses is simple enough. They combine sunglasses with headphones. There aren’t any earbuds attached to the sunglasses, you simply hear the music through the sunglasses whilst they are on your head. Cool, right?

The Sound Glasses come with a glasses case, lens wipe and instructions when you order them. You also get a USB charger which you will have to use straight away to fully charge the sunglasses before you start playing music through them. Once you are ready to use them, simply hold the ‘on’ button underneath the right temple. Here, you will find all the buttons you require to use them, this is just the ‘on/off’ button and a button that controls volume and changing songs. The USB port is situated between these two buttons. This minimal interface is convenient because you don’t want a pair of sunglasses to feel bulky and covered in buttons. When you are using them, you will just have to remember that one tap increases volume, two taps skips to the next song, and three taps restarts a song or goes back to the previous track. This may be a hassle to remember to begin with, but you will get used to it quickly. You can also use voice assistant and answer calls hands-free whilst using the Sound Glasses.

When you put the Sound Glasses on, they feel like a high-end pair of sunglasses. They sit lightly on your head (weighing in at just 38g) and fit perfectly without too much tightness around the bridge of the nose or the temples on the sides of your head. The lenses are polarised and have UV400 protection. But when it comes to playing music through them, this is where the problems begin. If you are used to wearing a pair of good quality over-ear headphones, then you will be rather disappointed with the audio quality of the Sound Glasses. They sound fine enough when the volume is at a low to medium level, but if you want to crank it, the high frequencies will become overwhelming very quickly and everyone will be able to hear what you are listening to because of the open speaker system. If you are partial to bass heavy music, then you will be saddened to hear that any low end disappears completely through these headphones.

If you are to buy the MusicMan Sound Glasses, then you need to be aware that they won’t act like the best headphones in the world, but this isn’t actually too much of a problem if you get them for the right reasons. If you simply want to take a gentle stroll at the beach on a hot summer’s day with some nice quiet gentle music or maybe a podcast, then the Sound Glasses will more than suffice. If you wanted to submerse yourself into Tool album, then you will probably want to stick to your usual pair of headphones.

The Sound Glasses by MusicMan are certainly a brilliant idea. Currently they feel more like a gimmick, but I do have faith that this combination of sunglasses and headphones has the potential to be something brilliant.
