As the evenings draw in and we spend more and more of our waking hours in the dark, I found myself digging through the kitchen draw for my torch only to discover that the batteries I left in it last year had died.

This happens because even when a torch has been switched off, its batteries never disengage from the metal contacts inside, and this is enough to drain the batteries over time. Enter the patent pending Coleman’s BatteryLock Technology. This ever so simple but effective system disengages the batteries so the torch can be stored away and then re-engaged when you need to use it. Why hasn’t anyone else thought of this? All you have to do is twist the end of the torch until you can see a red BatteryLock band - this indicate that the batteries are disengaged. Twist it back until the band disappears and it ready to use again.

The Divide+ 700 kicks out 700 lumens of light output with a beam distance of 330 metres or 70 lumens output with a beam output of 110 metres, and a run-time of 7hours on 700 lumens and 55hrs on 70 lumens. So, in a nut shell, you have the option of bright or exceptionally bright to choose from.

The torch itself is very tactile, with a nice weight to it and a handy wrist strap. A little texture on the handle wouldn’t go amiss, especially if it’s raining, as it can be a little slippery on bare skin or in woollen gloves. However, the on/off button is nice and big as well as responsive, so it is easy to use even with my cumbersome ski gloves on.

Overall I liked the Divide+ 700 - it is a powerful torch with an innovative system that will keep your batteries (all 6 of them) full of life for longer. RRP £49.99
