Last month we reviewed the Handpresso as a standalone product and I have just got my hands on the Minipresso GR by Wacaco, so for this review I will be playing them off against each other.

Both are attractive pieces of kit with the Minipresso being slightly smaller and compact, although I felt the Handpresso came in much better packaging – the price of the Handpresso is £73 against the lower price of the £48 Minipresso.

The proof is in the pudding as they say and what I want to find out is which makes the better coffee, I used the same ground coffee in both, the first differences to be seen here are when packing the coffee in the Portafilter with the Handpresso I needed to invest in a Tamper but with the Minipresso the back of the scoop works as a Tamper itself.  Point one to Minipresso.

Before adding the coffee and hot water to the Handpresso you need to pump up the device to build up the pressure, with the Minipresso you add the coffee and hot water and then start pumping.  You then continue pumping the Minipresso and a few seconds later the expresso will be dispensed and you just keep pumping until it’s all been released, with the Handpresso you release the pressure valve and it then just poured out, I prefer the action of the Handpresso on this one. Point one to Handpresso.

Looking at the appearance of both espresso’s made the Minipresso’s looked a lot more like what I make at home then the Handpresso which looked watery.  Upon taste I tried the Handpresso’s first it tasted fine but lacking in crema, I then tried the Minipresso’s and was amazed at the quality in tasted rich and smooth I was very impressed – point two and the most important point to Minipresso.

If I had to advise which product to choose hands down it would be the Minipresso, cheaper than the price of the Handpresso and it produces an amazing cup of espresso, the only negative I have for them is just to improve on the packaging – other than that loved it!! RRP £48
