As we move into autumn it is easy to rack up the excuses as to why going for that run is a bad idea, dark, cold and worst of all - wet, there’s nothing quite like the prospect of soggy socks to really put you off pulling on those trainers. Luckily, On Running is here to help force those feet out of the door with the On Running Cloud Waterproof running shoe. Falling into On Running’s Active Life category these are lightweight running shoes for regular running in urban areas but will happily protect your feet whilst you pop to the shops or explore new places on holiday thanks to their attractive design.
The magic is in the specially engineered mesh upper which is 100% water and windproof, the water will simply bead off, just like the sweat on your face, and the cold wind cannot penetrate to freeze your hard-working feet. They have even ensured you don’t have time to change your mind when lacing up with the easy step-in heel loop and lacing system, with an elastic lace instead of traditional laces you can slip your feet in and out without having to even touch the laces, no more picking at soggy laces with cold fingers after the run. If you plan on running through some shoe stealing mud, then you can always use the traditional laces included in the box and for a little extra visibility in those dark evenings, there is reflective safety detailing on the toe caps, heel and cloud elements.
These shoes have a heel to toe offset of 6mm and weight just 216 g (US Women’s size 7), they are available in both men and women’s options with half sizes available, they are only in the Black and Lunar design, although there is only one style to choose from they look great and won’t show the effects of muddy puddles. The Cloud Waterproof are comfortable straight out of the box, easy to slip into, those little clouds on the bottom of the shoe create a firmer landing than some of On Running’s other line but it hasn’t caused me any problems in the shin or knees. The grip isn’t great on softer grounds, but they easily handle wet tarmac, probably best avoid it you plan to do a mixture of trail or grass alongside urban running. They provide a good amount of support around the foot, there is plenty of room in the toe box and those elasticated laces provide the perfect amount of tension to keep your foot firmly in the shoe whilst allow it to flex naturally and remain comfortable as it expands with heat and pressure. The water and windproof worked well, it allows you to keep your head up, so forget about avoiding puddles, get out and embrace the bad weather and earn some winter miles. RRP £140
