The Robotic Workshop, designed for ages 10+, is a kit that lets you to build and program robots with this complete robotics engineering system. With the use an ultrasonic sensor, light sensor, touch sensor, precision motor, geared motor, CB1 core controller, speaker and sound sensor, and hundreds of snap-together building pieces. They make ten different robots as well as allowing you to make your own designs too. The workshop aims to teach you how the sensors can be used to control the robots, you can build an ultrasound robot that can avoid obstacles, a drawing robot, and a touch sensor robot and then move on to more complex robots that have multiple functions, such as a ball-shooting robot, a crawling robot, and a grabbing robot. You can even build a robotic arm that can pick up objects, a butler robot, a robot that will turn toward a light source, and a scorpion robot.
The robots are controlled in real-time and programmed to perform series of commands using a app on iOS (must support Bluetooth 4.0 and must be running iOS 8 or later) or Android (devices must support Bluetooth 4.0 and must be running Android 5.0 or later, a display of 9.7 inches or larger is recommended tablets) and Windows PCs. The PC app connects to the core controller via a USB cable and then the app uses the open source visual block programming library Google Blockly to make coding fast and easy to understand. It all sounds so promising, a budding engineer’s dream, right? Well, this is a far from perfect toy, normally, it’s the assembly that makes you want to rip your hair out but putting this together was good fun, trying to get the thing to work was a different story. We found the app buggy, the Bluetooth connection kept dropping out, it was difficult to get the robot to perform its functions consistently or at all, which was frustrating. The pieces are quite robust but when assembled it doesn’t very feel very stable. The Robotics Workshop would be awesome if the app worked, you can build cool robots to look at, but don’t expect them to become your loyal servants. RRP £100
