The Geko Whistle is the world’s first Smart Whistle. It comes with GPS tracking and Bluetooth technology, and it can be used to alert your loved ones instantly in an emergency. It works alongside the WISO app, which needs to be downloaded onto your smartphone and paired with your Whistle. You then need to select your emergency contacts on the app - these are the people that will be notified when you need assistance, so choose wisely.

To call for help, there are two ways to activate your SOS alerts - you can either blow on the mouthpiece or press the Smart Whistle’s button and hold it for two seconds. If you have an Android device, either of these actions can be used to call your emergency contacts, or for both Android and iOS it can be used to send them a text and email. The texts and emails contain an SOS message along with a map containing your current location, which will be continuously updated every two to three minutes until the alert is deactivated. When you deactivate the alert, your contacts will receive another message informing them of your well-being.

Aside from the message alerts, you can also keep blowing your whistle and/or set your app to play a loud siren to attract others, or set stealth mode to remain quiet. A few things to consider before rushing out and getting one of these - it needs to be connected to the app to work, which means it also needs WiFi or data to work. It is available in most countries, but not in all of them, so it is worth checking the website before buying one. The Smart Whistle comes with 30 free SOS SMS per month, looks good and is well made, but it has left me in two minds as to whether it’s a useful device or not. If you are worried about an older relative, will they be able to work their way around the app? It does have a place in the market, but I think it is very niche. RRP $49.99
