A market, I am shocked that, Apple hasn’t cornered already is that of the controller with the amount of games available on Apple Store for your phone, tablet and Apple TV there must be one on the way?
However, in the meantime Steel Series are taking full advantage with their latest offering for Apple devices the Nimbus Controller, I have reviewed products for Steel Series in the past so I am looking forward to having some fun with this, I mean playing games as an actual job does it get much better!!!
The first thing I noticed when receiving the Nimbus was on the packaging where it said made for Apple TV, iPhone, iPad and iPod – having done some research I understand that Apple actually worked with Steel Series on the design of the controller and on the official Apple website it is listed under accessories as the preferred unofficial Apple controller which is a great endorsement. I would describe the design of the Nimbus as a mash up of both the Xbox One and PS4 controllers, leaning slightly more towards Xbox, although it has the YBAX format of Playstation. The controller comes in black and feels well made, it has a large menu button in the middle and a glowing light above indicating how many controllers you have currently got connected.
When connecting the controller to the Apple TV I was impressed with the Bluetooth 4.1 as there wasn’t any lag the only problem I faced was a few times the Bluetooth signal dropped out and I had to reconnect. It is also worth mentioning here that Apple has released the tvOS App Store where game controller support is clearly identified which I found really helpful, this made using the Nimbus Controller itself a more enjoyable experience as I knew the titles I was downloading would work. One thing to bear in mind is that to charge the Nimbus Controller you need a lightning cable and you don’t get one of these in your box so you will need to use one you have lying round the house, however you won’t need to use it that often as the remote has an impressive battery life of 40 hours. This is by far the best controller I have used on Apple software and if you looking to get the best out of the games available on the Apple Store this is the controller to go for. RRP €59.95
