Humanscale FR500 Ergonomic Foot Rocker

I have been experiencing the highs and lows of home office set-ups during lockdown (and Lockdown Two: The Sequel), so as you can imagine, I was thrilled to receive a series of products to test from Humanscale. Based in New York, Humanscale is a company that focuses on producing ergonomic, carefully designed office furniture and accessories that aim to give you the healthiest, most comfortable office set-up you can get, and to look stylish into the bargain. Let’s face it – when we evolved, we weren’t evolving to sit in one spot for our 9 to 5, so when we’re at work, we need to take care of ourselves. This became more apparent to me than ever during lockdown, as I spent months hopping from one chair to another in my house looking for somewhere to hunker down with a laptop, and my back hasn’t thanked me for it! Now, finally, I’ve put together a proper office space. So, how did these products from Humanscale fit in?

I didn’t think of a foot rocker as something that could be designed stylishly, but I was wrong. We received the FR500 Ergonomic Foot Rocker in a black wood, but it is also available in a polished cherry. In both cases, these woods are paired with an attractive aluminium and steel. Overall, the design looks timeless, like it could be easily at home in either a modern or old-fashioned office aesthetic.

The purpose of this product, as you might have guessed, is to keep your feet rocking whilst you’re at your desk. Ever had to stop working to fidget around, flex your feet or stretch your legs? This rocker tackles that problem, and in a way that’s far better for your joints than being at a standing desk all day! As well as benefitting your legs and feet, it also relieves pressure from your lower back – all in all, that’s desk discomfort solved!

The difference in my comfort levels whilst using this rocker was huge, and I also appreciated the fidget-move it provided. I’m a natural fidgeter, so it was nice to have an outlet that I knew was better for me, not worse (usually, my fidgeting turns into slouching!). A god-send for a squirmer like me, the rocker has subtle rubber grips on the surface to help your feet to stay in place. I’m glad Humanscale included these, but I’m even more impressed by the fact that they did so without lessening the attractive look of the design.

I wouldn’t have thought to get a foot rocker for my office, but now, I’m thinking again. Combined with the right chair, this could make your time at your desk so much more comfortable, which in turns means it’s healthier and probably more productive. For $99, this isn’t cheap for an add-on accessory, but it’s proven to be a more essential item than I previously thought, and you get a lot of attractive design for your buck.
