Bicycle exhaust? Surely there’s no such a thing? Think again! The Turbospoke can turn any eco-friendly bicycle into a petrol guzzling crotch rocket - or at least can make it sound like one.
Turbospoke aims to give a bicycle the look and sound of having an exhaust engine. The toy has two parts: a lightweight plastic mock exhaust, complete with 15 stickers for customisation, and Motocards, plastic cards that create a motor-like sound when hit by wheel spokes.
The Turbospoke comes with three different Motocards, which are tuneable for up to six different sounds. The faster you go, the faster the wheel will hit the cards and produce the sound, giving the impression of an engine speeding up. This technique isn’t a new trick; shortly after baseball cards became popular, kids started attaching their least favourite players to their bike spokes with pegs to annoy their neighbours with as much noise as possible. The Turbospoke exhaust case supposedly works as an amplifier for the Motocards, though it doesn’t increase the volume much.
The Turbospoke is easy to attach and doesn’t require batteries, as it works purely on pedal power. It is designed to fit 95% of bicycles with a wheel of 16" or greater, and is suitable from ages 6+.
So how did it perform? Well, from opening the product to having it attached to the bike and in the hands of one of our little testers took about 30 minutes in total - this is roughly the same amount of time it took for our tester to return to us with a handful of sharp pieces of broken grey plastic.
We were informed that out little cyclist had just ‘laid’ the bike down on the pavement, but this is coming from someone will make an entire house shake when asked to quietly close the door. Whether the bike was laid or tossed on the ground in neither here nor there - as a product designed for children, it needs to more robust. The worst part was that when the Turbospoke worked it sounded cool, which just added to the disappointment of our driver.
So to summaries, this is a fun idea with entertaining sounds, but a cheap build quality that lets the product down. When it breaks, which it does quite easily, it becomes a sharp and rather dangerous hazard to have attached to your child’s bike. RRP £14.99
